NASTT’s Subsurface Investigations Good Practices Guidelines – First Edition (2020)

NASTT’s Subsurface Investigations Good Practices Guidelines – First Edition (2020)

The published work serves as a companion document to a portion of “NASTT’s New Installations Good Practices Training Course” and is intended to provide contractors, engineers, and utility owners with an overview of the many benefits of this widely practiced trenchless method. Understanding subsurface conditions provides insight into the source of the geologic materials, and the presence of potential buried objects which can have a significant impact on the outcome of a trenchless construction project. The subsurface conditions often dictate the most effective trenchless approach and may eliminate certain trenchless techniques as feasible options for the pipeline installation. Potential buried objects that can stop a trenchless project include naturally occurring or manmade objects. This publication serves to provide information on the elements of geotechnical investigations and other due diligence which is required to adequately characterize the subsurface environment prior to advancing a trenchless pipeline installation.

All NASTT publications are peer reviewed by volunteer industry professionals to ensure that they offer generic and non-commercial information. This publication was funded solely by NASTT as part of our educational outreach programming.
