Abstract: The Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company (PGL) owns 17 critical utility tunnels located in the City of Chicago, constructed during the late 19th century and early to mid-20th century, that house gas pipelines. The project includes assessment, inspection and potential remediation of these tunnels and associated pipelines. Initial assessments have been conducted and an order of inspection determined based on age and condition of the tunnels. This paper discusses this risk assessment process as well as the inspection planning and safety measures required to complete the first two tunnel inspections.
